43: How to Manage Your Podcast with a Chronic Illness

Running a business with a chronic illness is hard enough. Adding a podcast into the mix takes extra planning to make sure that you manage your energy and don’t burn out. In this episode, I share tips that make it easier.

I officially became an entrepreneur in 1999—the same year I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, though it first emerged in 1986. I also have chronic migraine. It took 20 years to get “good” at running a business with chronic illness because most of those years went un- or under-treated—and because I ignored the illnesses and followed other people’s standard operating procedures of what it meant to be an entrepreneur and how to do business.

“In the entrepreneur world, no one makes accommodations for us. We have to make them for ourselves.”

I’ve been podcasting for fun since 2012. But, when I added a podcast to my business (now two podcasts), I knew I had to have a plan so that I wouldn’t get overwhelmed and burn out. I had to create my own standard operating procedures for my business and my podcast that took into consideration my migraines and my bipolar disorder. I had spent years getting both under control. I couldn’t let a business or a podcast destroy hard-won stability.

Why should you listen to this episode? You’ll learn:

  • A bit about my story with chronic illness

  • The 4 things we entrepreneurs with chronic illness need to do when running a business and a podcast

  • The 7 things I personally do to make sure I stay stable with my chronic illnesses while running a business and two podcasts
