86: Live-Streaming for Podcasters with Joie Gharrity

It may sound like a big leap to go from creating an audio podcast to live-streaming a video podcast. But there are so many benefits of it—and it is so much fun!

This episode was live-streamed with my guest Joie Gharrity. We discuss the benefits of live-streaming, how to get started, best practices, and more!

Even if you end up sharing audio only, live-streaming the episode is a great way to expand your audience. You can also get more engagement by taking questions from a live audience. Taking those questions means you’ll discover what your audience is really looking for and what they really need. From there, you can hone in on customizing your show for them.

Live-streaming isn’t as difficult as you might think. I use Streamyard. That’s also what I use for recording guests without live-streaming. Choose whatever streaming platform you want. Link it to the social platform of your choice. Joie and I streamed this episode to YouTube. Then off you go!

Joie notes in our interview that you can save time in editing by playing your intro and outro during the livestream. It’s a great way to brand your livestream. Then you don’t have to edit those in later. In fact, Joie says that she does little to no editing of her livestreams at all when she later publishes them!

Personally, I love doing video. I love the energy of live-streaming. But… I prefer listening to audio podcasts. I tend not to watch many videos—except, you know, HBO Max and Apple TV+, ha ha. I create my show in multiple formats to accommodate my listeners.

Even if you prefer audio-only, you may want to consider creating multiple formats in order to reach a wider audience—to capture listeners as well as viewers and viewers who want to interact live.
